Millet (Panicum miliaceum, Proso millet) is an annual plant belonging to the family Poacea, known since more than 7,000 years ago. Its homeland is considered to be China and Transcaucasia.
Millet is an indispensable crop for food and feed crop which is grown all over the world:
-Vitamins- E, A, B1 and B2 and PP;
-Minerals- phosphorus; magnesium; Iron; Honey; calcium; Silicon;
-Amino acids- methionine and cysteine;
-Proteins, fiber, fats and carbohydrates;
Millet finds great application in bird feeding due to:
-Attractive, tasty and healthy treat;
-High nutritional value and low fat content;
-High content of good carbohydrates, easily digestible because of the fibers it contains;
-Strengthens the immune system;
-Counteracts acids due to its alkalinity, reduces stress and supplies essential vitamins;
There are many varieties of millet as it is grown in many countries. According to the colour of the seeds, the varieties are grouped into three large groups: yellow, white and red millet.
Bulgaria is traditional producer and exporter of yellow millet. The climatic conditions in the country are the reason for only one harvest per year. The millet is harvested in August. The seeds are stored in warehouses. Cleaning and preparation is carried out in specialized cleaning stations.

The striped sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual plant that is cultivated in many countries and on different continents. Its seeds are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, large amounts of minerals, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, iron and zinc, vitamins B and E and minerals. The sunflower is considered to be native to North America. As a cultivated species, indigenous tribes began growing it more than 4,500 years ago.
There are two major groups of striped sunflower seeds depending on the oil content:
Oil seeds - mainly intended for oil production;
No - oilseeds - low oil content;
There are two types of sunflower seeds depending on the color and pattern of the shell:
- In the case of a black shell - the seed is called a black sunflower seed;
- In the case of a black shell with white stripes - the seed is called a striped sunflower seed;
Depending on the size of the seed, striped sunflower is of two types:
-Small;
-Large;
Depending on the variety, striped sunflower can be a direct variety or a hybrid. Striped sunflower is mainly used for human and bird food. It is a favorite ingredient for poultry as the good fat content of the sunflower seeds provides them with both a varied and high energy diet.
